A Cautionary Tale

One word, Danger.  Two words, Slippery Slope.  Three words, Beware of Brother.
The trouble with wanting a little space for a craft area is that when you ask for one thing you end up with a whole lot more.  One shelf leads to 5 and one table leads to three.  A little light here and the next thing you know is you have track lighting, white paint and windows everywhere.  A roof repair leads to a new roof, a little cement sidewalk leads to a driveway.  A little wishing well turns into a fish pond with a waterfall as big as Niagara Falls.
I should have been warned as I watch “This Old House” and “Sarah’s House”, nothing is ever “just that easy” as my brother is willing to remind me several times a day as he curses while struggling with tight corners and I scream at a hammered thumb.  Both of us have wobbly knees and twisted backs but we labour on as we envision Downton Abbey in miniature form.  Alright, maybe not Downton Abbey but my own little castle.  Okay, okay, my little log cabin on the prairie (but somehow that doesn’t sound nearly so romantic).
Some things can make a very strong impression on a person.  Reading “Little House in the Big Woods” led to bigger and better “Gone with the Wind” but the common theme was “land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything . . . for tis the only thing in this world that lasts”.  My parents were always very house proud and enjoyed decorating their homes.  My father was never a handy man but with my mother’s help they would hang wallpaper and paint walls and later on Dad even put up panelling.  I remember he had a real love of walnut and almost every one of our homes had walnut wood somewhere.  At least one wall of the house also had grass wall paper and it’s something I respond to whenever I see it (which doesn’t happen very often now as wallpaper of any kind is very passé).
At the end of a renovating phase all I can sigh is “Home Sweet Home”.

A Broken Vacation

So what is a broken vacation in this context? That’s when the weekend arrives and you can’t go “Yahoo, I’m on vacation” because you have to go in on Monday to sort things out. Then you can say “Yahoo I’m on vacation” for all of 6 days! 9 days vs 6 days.

That being said “Yahoo I’m on a broken vacation”!

I slept in until 7:30 this morning while Cherie and Thumper sat on my shoulder and my head trying to make me get up. Finally they gave in and curled up beside me and fell asleep again. At 7:30 Cherie poked me in the eye indicating enough was enough. Slow and easy coffee and toast in the sunroom, putzed around my flowers and then schlepped to the office to think of something to write about.

So where did vacation come from? As far back as Egyptian times there were rich people who took vacations from their regular home base. However I was very surprised to learn that William the Conqueror created the summer vacation break for the universities to facilitate the harvest way back in the 11th century! For the middle class family though vacations weren’t common until the middle of the last century and even then they would usually go to a local lake or cottage area for a week. The lower middle classes never expected to go on a vacation until when? I can’t say for sure. When I see movies from the 1960’s it seemed everyone went on some kind of vacation. It was very American or Canadian. It was unheard of in my family. I was 18 years old when I went to Denmark for 4 months and that was my first vacation in my whole life. Seriously.

On this vacation I plan to stay home to do the autumn shutdown of the garden, do a little harvesting of apples (apple pies and apple sauce are on the horizon) and perhaps tackle the indoors as well. Somewhere in all of this I will squeeze in a few hours to loll on the deck with a good book or good company. I like quiet time alone to reflect on life, enjoy the nature around me, and make things perfect for the winter. I know it won’t last but I enjoy the effort anyway.

While summer is my favourite season I really do enjoy a warm autumn. When I visit my sister in Ontario we would go for walks in the woods and that is the ultimate autumn experience. The variety of trees makes for the most glorious display of fall colours, reds, oranges, yellows, browns, purples while here we have yellow and yellow. Pretty dull comparison but the crunch of the leaves is just the same. I like the crunch of leaves under foot and the whole idea of the earth going to sleep for a little while. Sometimes I wish I could do that too, just hibernate over the nasty winter months and wake up to the sweet smell of spring.

Vacation - here I come!

Dofino Cheese and Other Things

I enjoyed my first toast with Dofino Cheese (it’s a Canadian version of Danish Havarti cheese) this morning. My nieces and nephews will all tell you what my standard breakfast is. When they were young and had a sleepover at my house that is what we had for breakfast. I made it interesting for them because in the beginning I would tell them this was my special breakfast and they couldn’t have any. Naturally they immediately wanted Dofino cheese for breakfast. I believe that most of them still enjoy this cheese on occasion.

After a quick breakfast (my alarm clock was out by 15 minutes) I got washed and dressed. I naturally am dressed to the Nines, my New York City red sheath, Luis Lopez jewellery and yes, my hair is decent! I will be wearing my NYC coat on the bus this morning so that I can truly feel that I am back to my Uptown Girl status!

Cherie is sitting on my lap as I attempt to type, nudging my arms for hugs and pets. He has obviously forgiven me for abandoning him to Uncle Erik for 5 weeks. Thumper has cozied up to Erik but Cherie is a one woman cat (super grin J ) and has eyes only for me! LOL

I am happy and looking forward to my first day back at work. Who would have thought that five weeks ago? No don’t send me to the psych ward unless I start writing about a 5 week trip to Paraguay!

The Eagle Has Landed

I'm ecstatic to be home. John picked me up and took me to MacDonald's for a Big Mac!

I've had my hot bath, I've cuddled with Cherie and Thumper, I've napped and I've talked to my Mom and my friends. And lastly, I've watched American T.V. -- V and The Good Wife.

It's so good to be home.

Back to work tomorrow. Reality sets in!
