Day 5 Jan 18 Tuesday Bahia to Manta

This day was not so bad as yesterday when it came to getting our taxi ride to Manta. However, once we reached Manta we did do some considerable shopping and then we gratefully got our luggage and supplies sent to the resort via Chandal’s friends but it took 2 vehicles! I have a feeling we are getting to be celebrities in this town! What a commotion at the Supermaxi!

The people are incredible here. They are curious but also so very helpful. We stand out like a sore thumb, being so light, we are obviously European or Americano. Everywhere they manage to ask where we are from and we always say Canada because we know Canadians have a good reputation here. As soon as we say Canada they nod and appear to recognize the country.

They are a good looking people but two distinct types. There are the true indigenous people who are extremely short, anywhere from 3 to 4.5 feet tall. And then the ones who are of some kind of Spanish descent. They are very attractive both men and women, in the main. From what I have gleaned by talking to the ones with some English skills it appears that English is not taught unless it is in private schools so there is a real handicap to the tourist trade. The biggest thing to my mind is to teach the bus and cab drivers English. Everything else we can figure out but it is not easy to convey where you want to go! More on that another time!

We had a nice dinner down by the docks at Bahia last night and made friends with three stray cats who sat under our table and chairs while we ate our meal. It was an outdoor cafe and I can say that the vaccination nurse in High River did not have her information correct. Perfectly great food. In fact, to date we have had marvellous food though this was the first time we were in a place that was not “high end”. After dinner we strolled along the esplanade I think you would call it. We felt quite safe, the evening was balmy and it was just amazing for me to think that I was in the tropics while my friends and family were freezing in Canada!
